Faced with estimated $400-a-month water bills, the Cape Girardeau County Court has turned off the water to the Common Pleas Courthouse fountain in Cape Girardeau; the water was turned off last Thursday, after Missouri Utilities Co. installed a water meter for the fountain, and the county was notified it would be billed for water usage.

About 12,000 voters, or approximately 40 percent, of Cape Girardeau County's 28,785 registered voters are expected to go to the polls in tomorrow's primary.

50 years ago: Aug. 2, 1957

Missouri Utilities Co. officials say they have been unable to find the cause of a power outage about 7:40 last night that plunged a section of Cape Girardeau's north-central residential area into darkness for varying periods of time.

Cape Girardeau's South Division All-Stars and seven other teams were eliminated in the first round of the State Babe Ruth Tournament yesterday at Capaha Park; Cape Girardeau's other team, the North Division, advanced on a forfeit by Webb City.

75 years ago: Aug. 2, 1932

His vigorous campaign for the Democratic nomination for governor at an end, Sen. R.L. Dearmont comes home to Cape Girardeau to await the counting of ballots cast in today's election in Missouri; shortly after arriving, Dearmont retires for a needed rest before the vigil tonight.

Jettie Hampton, a social worker of wide experience in both Missouri and Illinois, has been appointed police matron of Cape Girardeau by the city council; her salary was fixed at $100 per month, and she will provide for the upkeep of her own automobile.

100 years ago: Aug. 2, 1907

A great deal of excitement is generated by an unattached tender, which rolls away from the Houck Railroad shops near the depot and bolts east at a rapid rate; it crosses the trestle and proceeds on down the Houck track to the Frisco tracks; the tender runs into a closed switch near the South Cape Store and is ditched.

The Cape Girardeau Brewing Co.'s new line of beer -- Capaha -- has become popular after just a week's trial; dealers say they have had an unusually great demand for the brew.
