Second restaurant delivery driver was robbed Tuesday evening in Cape Girardeau in as many weeks; robberies and two near-misses have some local restaurant delivery operations taking note; latest victim was Abdel Hamid Sid Ahmed, who delivers for Dino's Pizza Palace.

Mary McBride surprised co-workers with notification this week that she would resign as executive director of Private Industry Council; she will become branch supervisor of Manpower Inc. of Sikeston.

Mississippi Queen comes to Cape Girardeau, bringing with her yet another queen -- Helen Hayes, one of undisputed queens of American theater; Hayes and her son, actor James McArthur, are among passengers on sister craft of sternwheeler Delta Queen.

50 years ago: Aug. 18, 1954

A.S. "Quill" Reed, Cape Girardeau insurance man, won unanimous endorsement yesterday of members of Republican County Committee for position of acting postmaster to succeed late Nat M. Snider.

At least two Cape Girardeau grocery stores have adopted 10-cent per pound reduction in coffee prices, and other stores may soon drop their prices as well; high coffee prices have been thorn in sides of both grocers and their customers for many months now, ever since nearly disastrous freeze in Brazil wreaked havoc in coffee crop.

75 years ago: Aug. 18, 1929

More than 2,600 Lutherans from Perry and Cape Girardeau counties assemble in afternoon in grove surrounding Lutheran church at Uniontown, Mo., to celebrate 400th anniversary of publication of Martin Luther's small catechism; celebration is held under auspices of Perry County Visitation Circuit.

Silver jubilee of Sister Aquina, principal of St. Mary's High School, celebrating 25 years in order of School Sisters of Notre Dame, is observed with special exercises.
