The Rev. and Mrs. Jim Dace have accepted the call to head the congregation of Third Street United Methodist Church; his last appointment was with the Wesley Foundation Center in Cape Girardeau.

1964

The Planning and Zoning Commission is recommending that the Cape Girardeau City Council adopt the same annexation plan proposed a year ago; generally, it calls for extension of the city limits westward to Interstate 55 and northward to Wedekind Park, while squaring off the city limits lines on the west and south.

Cape Girardeau's temperature drops to a chilly 47 degrees in the morning, the lowest here since the same reading was recorded May 4.

1939

In the absence of the vacationing the Rev. Don E. Schooler, Lt. Col. Victor Lundgren, divisional commander of the Salvation Army, is guest speaker at morning services at Centenary Methodist Church.

Justice Ivy McLain celebrates his 69th birthday with a reception at the family home at Neelys Landing, a large number of friends attending; McLain, widely known in the north half of the county, was appointed a justice of the peace in 1889, and has served most of the time since in Shawnee Township.

1914

Sand is about the most sought-after material in Cape Girardeau; every contractor in town is calling for sand; the Morrison sand dredges are working right along, hauling barge after barge; but as soon as one lands, there are a dozen or so wagons waiting to haul it away; the great amount of street working being done, as well as work on the new Methodist church building, the new Park Theater and dozens of new residences, are all calling for sand.

That gang of gypsies, who had been camped just north of the city on Juden Creek for the past few weeks, broke camp yesterday and departed for parts unknown; Constable D. Scivally paid them a visit yesterday morning and urged them to move on.
