James Hoffa, president of the national Teamsters union, is expected to be in Cape Girardeau in October for the dedication of the new Teamsters building here; the dedication of the new building at 429 Broadview St. is tentatively set for Oct. 12.

A Missouri Pacific Railroad work crew will begin the task of overhauling the Independence Street surface between the tracks tomorrow; work will begin at Sprigg and Independence streets and will proceed westward.

1938

Setting of the cut stone base for the walls of the addition at St. Francis Hospital began this week; it's anticipated that brick masons will start their work next week.

Marshall Morton, substitute member of the Cape Girardeau Police Department, has been working recently while patrolman E.W. Hirsch was off duty; for the next two weeks, he'll be working in the place of Fritz Schneider, who is to go to the National Guard encampment tomorrow.

1913

Charles Kunkel of Seattle is visiting his uncle, August Hennecke, who lives near Jackson; 25 years ago, Kunkel, then just a poor boy, took a notion to see the West, and Hennecke staked him; since then, Kunkel has prospered.

Another one of Cape Girardeau's old buildings, which was erected about the time of the Civil War, is being torn down; the eyesore is on South Middle Street, just off Good Hope Street; it is owned by Henry Willer, the Broadway grocer.
