Lack of money and time forces the volunteer committee that organized the Senior Fun Fest the past two years to cancel this year's festival, which had been scheduled for Aug. 23 at Trail of Tears State Park.

The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, AFL-CIO, is attempting to attract new members from Southeast Missouri with an advertisement campaign featuring television star Vicki Lawrence as her character Mama.

50 years ago: Aug. 13, 1961

The Rev. R.C. Holliday is on vacation from his pulpit at Centenary Methodist Church; during the four weeks of August, Dr. Frank C. Tucker, a retired minister, will deliver the sermon at the morning worship hour on Sundays.

Harold Feuerhahn, the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Feuerhahn of Cape Girardeau, has received a vicarage assignment from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis; in June he completed 10 years training for the ministry in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and is now eligible to accept his appointment for a year of theological internship at Jehovah Lutheran Church in Chicago.

75 years ago: Aug. 13, 1936

At the lowest stage at this time of year at Cape Girardeau within the recollection of veteran pilots, the Mississippi River appears to be little larger than a big creek; still, barge lines expect to encounter no difficulty in shipping unless the stream falls at least 3 feet below the present low mark of 6.5 feet.

The Ochs water well at Pioneer Orchard on Bloomfield Road has been finished, it requiring nearly a month of day and night drilling to put the well down; it is 838 1/2 feet deep, approximately 800 feet being drilled through rock.

100 years ago: Aug. 13, 1911

D.E. Henry, an engineer in the department of public works for the Philippines, is here visiting the family of J.C. Stone; Henry was educated at the Normal School and made his home for a number of years with the Stones.

William Vedder, the Excelsior Music Co. man, has purchased a red run-about car from Dr. Moore; he will use it to make daily trips between his downtown business and his home in the west end.
