Southeast Missourian publisher Gary Rust has announced that Peter D. Kinder, a 33-year-old Cape Girardeau native, has joined the newspaper as associate publisher; Kinder, an attorney, will assist Rust with all phases of the operation, including working closely with the news, editorial and advertising staffs.

CAIRO, Ill. -- Authorities cut and destroy 230 marijuana plants growing on a Mississippi River sandbar north of here; more plants will be cut and burned tomorrow, but no arrests have been made.

Southeast Missouri's three Navy Science Cruisers depart St. Louis aboard a Navy plane for San Diego, Calif., and almost a week ashore and afloat with the Navy; Fieldon Miller, Ray Keller and John Rigdon, representing the Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair, won their trips through exhibits in science fairs this year and a year ago.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- A crowd estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 persons attended the first night of the SEMO Shrine Mounted Patrol's seventh annual horse show here yesterday; the event will continue tonight at the Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo Arena.

The first project in the state highway program for 1938 will be the construction of the additional strip of concrete that will complete the Highway 61 boulevard around Cape Girardeau, it was announced in Jefferson City last night; the project will come under the federal classification of roadside beautification, and half the cost will be paid by the federal government.

An old landmark which has stood on the corner of West Main Street and Farmington Avenue in Jackson for approximately 100 years is being razed to make way for a modern dwelling, which will be occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Henry R. Meier; the old house has been known for a number of years as the Morgan house, but was built by the early Fulenwider family, one of the girls marrying Bern Morgan.

The directors of the Cape Girardeau County Fair have decided to give a livestock judging contest for county boys, to be held the second day of the fair; cash prizes of $30 will be awarded the boys making the highest scores.

The Rev. George Meyer of Egypt Mills has accepted a call to a Lutheran congregation at Schumm, Van Wert County, Ohio; he will preach his farewell sermon next Sunday.
