It's official: Sam's Club is coming to Cape Girardeau; Sam's Club officials have confirmed plans to build 134,900-square-foot warehouse adjacent to Wal-Mart Supercenter near Route K/Siemers Drive intersection.
Dean of College of Business Administration at Southeast Missouri State University has resigned to take similar administrative position at small Catholic university in Miami; Richard Schmidt, who helped push Southeast's business program along road toward national accreditation, will be dean of school of business at St. Thomas University.

Long lines of traffic during peak hours at Independence and Kingshighway are shortening motorists' tempers and lengthening times necessary to pass through electronic-controlled intersections; numerous complaints have been voiced about intersection, one of city's busiest, and particularly about right-turn lane onto North Kingshighway.
Popularity of residential curb-side container pickup service instituted in June has been so great that city is considering purchase of three more containers to expand program; five containers are presently in use.

Daring robber uses ice pick to hold up night attendant at Pure Ice Co., 314 S. Ellis, early in morning, forcing him to turn over about $47 from cash register; police capture bandit in taxicab at west approach to traffic bridge shortly afterward; Herman W. Musgrave, night engineer, is uninjured.
Iron lung was shipped to polio clinic at St. Francis Hospital last night from St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis to care for extreme emergency case, according to Raymond Ritchie, physical therapist at hospital; rocking bed was received earlier this week for another patient; St. Francis is first Missouri hospital to need emergency polio equipment this year.
75 years ago: Aug. 1, 1927
Bern J. Sands is appointed superintendent of Cape Girardeau plant of International Shoe Co., to succeed D.B. Smith, who has resigned to return to Virginia; Sands has been supervising work at factory for several weeks since departure of Smith.
Advance - Bandits invaded this town last night and, while citizenry slept, blasted open safes in two different places, forced another in post office and broke into Bank of Advance, and escaped without alarming town; only revolver was stolen from bank, and it was apparent that no effort was made to open heavy safe in building.
