Cape Girardeau Planning and Zoning Commission Wednesday recommended only minor changes to city laws that regulate day care homes; commission's review of day care regulations was prompted by recent neighborhood dispute over day care home on Delwin Street.

Abandoned quarry in northeast corner of Trail of Tears State Park is officially closed, and trespassers will be cited by park rangers if they enter quarry; no-trespassing signs have been posted along Burlington Northern Railroad tracks near Wescoat Marina and at bottom of trail that leads down to railroad tracks from scenic overlook bluff.

25 years ago: July 9, 1977

Long-reigning leadership of Laborers Local 282 is relinquished to dissident faction during reorganizational meeting at Teamsters Hall; to outgoing faction, which had been in power more than 20 years, it clearly is somber occasion; to newly elected group, it is almost emotional event; new president of union is Jimmie G. Bollinger.

Breeding swine won't be show this year at SEMO District Fair to avoid possibility of livestock becoming infected with virus known as pseudorabies.

50 years ago: July 9, 1952

Voiding of Republican-sponsored referendum petitions by Supreme Court yesterday assures Democratic nomination of incumbent Cong. Paul C. Jones of Kennett in primary election Aug. 5, but leaves two-way race in GOP contest for Congress in enlarged 10th Congressional District; Republicans running for seat are Otto B. Ankershell Marston and Andrew Sandegren of Perryville.

Previously voiced suggestion that city acquire Frederick Street bus terminal for offices to alleviate crowded municipal quarters in Common Pleas Courthouse arose again this week; City Commissioner J.W. McBride pointed out building could be acquired by city either through negotiation or through condemnation proceedings.

75 years ago: July 9, 1927

Directors of Cape Girardeau Hotel Co. have retained architects to draw plans and specifications for new Hotel Marquette to be built at corner of Broadway and Fountain; Manske & Barton, architects of St. Louis, were retained by company to complete plans for new building, while R.K. Knox, Cape Girardeau architect, will have immediate supervision while building is under construction.

After delay of more than three months because of high river stage, U.G.I. Contracting Co. starts work preliminary to sinking first of three mid-stream piers of new Cape Girardeau traffic bridge across Mississippi River; pile-driving machine and boat are taken to site of No. 3 pier, and workers start replacing pilings which had been washed out and driven out of alignment during recent flooding.
