PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Perry County authorities and officers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Marijuana Eradication Program are busy cutting and burning approximately 2,500 marijuana plants found growing on Grandma's Island, located on the west side of the Mississippi River, near Menfro, Mo.

A lack of funds likely will force Southeast Missouri State University's Golden Eagles Marching Band to turn down an invitation to perform during the half-time show of the 1988 Aloha Bowl in Honolulu.

Jay Nations, juvenile officer for Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties, tells the Chamber of Commerce that Cape Girardeau needs a juvenile court building; such a building, says Nations, would house a regular juvenile courtroom, a headquarters and records room for juvenile officers and detention facilities adapted especially for teens in trouble.

The loss of revenue from city parking meters and the possibility of replacing worn-out meters are discussed by the City Council; a representative from Park-O-Meter Co. suggests the council consider replacing the oldest 500 meters in the city.

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education may, in the future, hire individual teachers for public schools here, rather than just approving a slate of instructors provided by the superintendent; along with the method of employing teachers, the question of the wisdom of hiring widows and married women was also discussed by the board at a recent meeting.

Cape Girardeau County Sheriff Fred Hartle and Trooper Percy R. Little are investigating the theft of a 300-pound gravestone from the Dutchtown community cemetery.

John H. Rouse has been given the contract to pave Good Hope Street from Spanish to Sprigg streets.

Three Cape Girardeau police officers were shifted from their usual beats yesterday, and folks are wondering just why it was done; George Talley, who has been on the Broadway beat for the last four years, has been sent to Main Street, to walk the beat that had been Walter Johnson's; Johnson has been sent to Haarig to patrol the beat that was Lee Atchison's; the latter has been sent to Broadway.
