The forecast for the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau to fall below four feet by Aug. 3 is causing organizers of the Soviet Peace Cruise some concern; the Delta Queen, with 50 Soviet citizens and 125 Americans and Canadian citizens aboard, is scheduled to depart St. Louis Aug. 5 and stop here Aug. 6 on its journey to New Orleans.

The city is taking steps to develop a comprehensive plan for the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport, which will detail future capital improvement projects for the facility.

1963

Keeping pace with State College's spiraling enrollment, the school's faculty has been expanded by 23 members; the additions bring the total number of faculty members to 191, including college and Campus School staffers and librarians.

A Cape Girardeau teens and 11 other Southeast Missouri residents are among the 52 passengers injured when a Greyhound bus skids on wet pavement at 5:05 a.m. and plunges down a 35-foot embankment on U.S. 61-67, two miles south of Arnold, Mo.; three passengers are killed; the injured Cape Girardeau teen is identified as Marshall G. Rodgers, 18.

1938

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education has approved a plan to allow the American Legion to use five school buildings as dormitories during the September state convention; the new auditorium at John S. Cobb School will house black Legionnaires.

L.A. Johnson of Kansas City, a former Kansas banker who has several years experience in hospital administrative work, is the new superintendent of Southeast Missouri Hospital; he succeeds T.J. McGinty.

1913

The meeting house of the First Baptist Church couldn't hold the crowd that wanted in last night; extra seats were used, children sat on the pulpit platform, several stood throughout the service, and a large number had to be turned away; 15 presented themselves for membership in the congregation and were received; 12 were then baptized.

At the City Council meeting, the auditing company that was engaged two months ago to examine the city's books for the biennial period ending in May reports that all accounts are in first-class shape.
