Workers have begun tearing down the old Landgraf Lumber Co. building in the 1400 block of Independence Street; the site will be used for a future expansion of the Thorngate Ltd. manufacturing facility.

50 years ago: July 7, 1960

Purchase of an extensive area of land in the Diversion Channel area six miles south of Cape Girardeau by the Armstrong Cork Co., one of the industrial giants of the nation, is announced by company officials; the company said the purchase was "for possible long-range future expansion."

Southeast Missouri delegates of the Missouri delegation to the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles will leave by plane from St. Louis tomorrow, with votes for Sen. Stuart Symington in their pockets; delegates are L.D. Lankford of Chaffee, Judge Fred Henley of Caruthersville, Rep. Paul C. Jones of Kennett, and Verle Riddle of Malden.

75 years ago: July 7, 1935

The annual program of union summer services begins in the evening at Courthouse Park under the auspices of the Ministerial Alliance; the sermon is delivered by the Rev. William H. Hackman, pastor of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church; a 30-minute prelude to the service is played by the Municipal Band under the direction of William A. Shivelbine.

Joe DeLassus, the catcher for the Moons in the Municipal League, has been tendered a contract by the Union City, Tenn., team of the Kitty League.

100 years ago: July 7, 1910

The Daily Republican has hired a couple of out-of-town artists to draw pictures of the leading men of the county; along with the drawings, biographies of each will be printed in the newspaper in a feature to be known as "The Men of Affairs in Cape Girardeau and Cape County."

Despite the heat, members of the school board met last night and conducted business until close to midnight; indicating their preference for cheerful school environments, members selected bright colors for the Lincoln School walls; the woodwork will be painted a cherry color and the walls will be olive green.
