Cape Girardeau is eligible for another installment of federal money for local flood-recovery efforts; Missouri Community Development Block Grant Program notifies city that it is able to apply for additional funds; city received $105,000 from state's first allocation of flood-relief money.

Rush-hour storm whips through area, bringing high winds and heavy rains but leaves little damage in its wake; .75 inches of rain is recorded at municipal airport, along with winds gusting to 30 miles per hour.

25 years ago: July 7, 1979

EAST CAPE GIRARDEAU, Ill. -- Bill awaiting signature of Gov. James Thompson will push legal drinking age back to 21 and would be effective Jan. 1, 1980; measure will nullify legislation that several years ago dropped age for legally purchasing wine and beer to 19; when Illinois drinking age dropped, weekend stream of traffic began to come to this area from neighboring Missouri, where age limit remained at 21.

Cape Girardeau Commission County, when it meets Monday, is expected to abandon earlier proposal that city of Cape Girardeau consider annexing Klaus Park; such decision would be based largely on opposition of Jackson city officials.

50 years ago: July 7, 1954

Identity of killer of Bonnie L. Huffman remains mystery, fifth day since she disappeared from her car on highway north of Delta; officials continue to search for murdered girl's missing glasses, purse, necklace and undergarment, which may indicate where killing took place.

Among items of business discussed by city council yesterday was request by NAACP that council end segregation in municipal swimming pool.

75 years ago: July 7, 1929

Building committee of Christ Evangelical Church has authorized Reither and Lindsay, local architects, to prepare final plans for new church building to be built at Ellis and Merriwether streets by congregation; $50,000 brick church will be built on site of present edifice, a frame structure.

Brickwork on new Sunday school building of First Presbyterian Church on lower Broadway is practically completed; walls are constructed of brick up to third floor, remainder of building to be housed under steep gabled roof.
