MALDEN, Mo. -- Claiming a commitment to education, country music singer Tammy Wynette has donated $10,000 to the Bootheel Education Center here; the center is an extension of Southeast Missouri State University.

A frontal system coming through the area, causing a line of thunderstorms from Chicago to Paducah, Kentucky, has made the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport one of the most popular stops on the cross-country Powder Puff Derby, women's air race; by 1:30 p.m., there are 22 contestants on the ground here, with three others expected before 4.

Admiral Claude V. Rickets, vice chief of naval operations, dies in Washington, D.C.; Rickets was made an honorary citizen of Cape Girardeau last October, when he visited here to address the Cape Girardeau chapter of the Navy League.

1939

Looking to a possible solution to a pressing problem -- the proper marking of city streets -- Mayor Edward L. Drum orders the police department to make a survey of the street intersections in the main part of the city to determine where and how many signs are needed.

The mercury looks intent on setting another record high mark for the season; it reaches 90 degrees before the noon hour and continues to climb; the 95 degrees attained yesterday was the high for the summer thus far.

1914

At the public sale in the afternoon, Maj. Giboney Houck purchases the seventh interest in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson Interurban Railway owned by the late L.S. Joseph.

Albert Klaproth is tearing down and removing the Stein & Lance mill ruins, having taken the contract to clear the premises for the brick; it is estimated there are at least 100,000 bricks in the structure; the engine room will be left standing to protect the engine, and the mortar and rubbish will be scraped into the basement.
