Nearly 700 Masons are expected to attend one of the largest conventions ever held in Cape Girardeau; members of The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the Masons in Missouri will be here Wednesday through Friday.

Cheri Sides, a 1987 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School, is the recipient of the Lincoln-John S. Cobb Alumni Scholarship; she plans to attend Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn.

50 years ago: July 6, 1962

Norval Jones, holder of various track records in the area in the 880-yard run, plans to attend the University of Missouri on a track athletic scholarship; Jones set all kinds of records at College High during his first three years in high school, before transferring to Central High his senior year.

A youth who hopes to some day be an illustrator for medical publications is earning money for college by working for the police department this summer; William N. Poinsett, 21, is servicing and maintaining the city's parking meters.

75 years ago: July 6, 1937

The Cape Girardeau City Council tables the matter of construction of a sanitary sewer system in the Red Star and Robertson and Gale additions on the north side, even though the project had been in the planning stages for months; a number of property owners in the area are opposed to the improvement.

Robert J. Kammer, who had been acting chief, is confirmed as fire chief by the city council; the council also approved the hiring of fireman Cletus Sams.

100 years ago: July 6, 1912

Cape Girardeau is to have another splendid church building, which will be on Themis Street; some time ago, the First Baptist Church appointed a building committee to draft plans for a new house of worship; the committee met yesterday with L.B. Pendleton, a leading St. Louis architect, who is planning the new state capitol at Jefferson City.

The Harvey News Co. is preparing to put in a news stand in the Frisco passenger station here in order to supply its train news agents running on the trains from Cape Girardeau; the stand will occupy the southeast corner of the ladies' waiting room and will extend out onto the south platform.
