When the steamboat Delta Queen docks early in the morning at Cape Girardeau, it's sporting the prized antlers on its pilot house, symbolizing yesterday's victory over the Mississippi Queen in this year's New Orleans to St. Louis Great Steamboat Race.

BENTON, Mo. -- Faced with an Aug. 15 state-imposed deadline for closing the Scott County landfill, county commissioners are scrambling to find a temporary answer to the waste disposal problem; one possibility is for the county to lease and operate the Mississippi County landfill.

With wheat harvest out of the way in most parts of Cape Girardeau County, farmers are beginning to size up the corn crop; the plants seem to be thriving in the hot weather; moisture has been adequate and has fallen exactly as needed.

President W.W. Parker of the Teachers College is hopeful the Public Works Administration will act favorably before the end of the week on the college's application for $143,000 to assist in the construction of a new library building and a dormitory.

Federal Judge George H. Moore, who was to have been here Thursday, fractured his wrist in a fall yesterday; it is expected Judge John C. Collet will be here to preside at the special session.

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education has called a special election for Tuesday to determine if free textbooks shall be supplied to all public school pupils; if a majority of voters favors the issue, the board will draw upon the state for the money for the textbooks.

Mrs. Marie Coleman of Trenton, Mo., was killed last evening in Poplar Bluff, Mo., when she plunged 200 feet to the ground while giving a parachute exhibition at the Fourth of July picnic of the Knights and Ladies of the Maccabees.
