There's been no change in 48.5-foot record flood crest that's expected to pass Cape Girardeau on Thursday; and good news is no heavy rains are forecast for next six to 10 days over Midwest, which has been deluged with heavy rains nearly every week for past three weeks; bad news is that even if it doesn't rain another drop north of here after today, Mississippi River will remain at flood stage at Cape Girardeau through late August.

Site preparation is under way for new Jackson Middle School at intersection of West Independence (Route D) and Broad Ridge; site work should be completed by end of August; Penzel Construction Co. of Jackson is doing site work.

25 years ago: July 30, 1978

The Rev. Edgar Keinath is installed as pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church at New Wells in evening service; he will also serve as counselor on staff of Lutheran Family and Children's Services in Cape Girardeau; Keinath is 1977 graduate of Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Ill., and spent past year in graduate program of Luther Seminary at St. Paul, Minn.

Otto J. Wulfers, son of German immigrant and owner of last fresh meat market that butchered its own animals for sale in Cape Girardeau, dies at family home, 1118 Broadway; he was 90 years old; Wulfers was last of four sons of Charles Wulfers; he married Leona T. Hahs in 1915, and she died in 1971; he is survived by two sons, five daughters and a sister.

50 years ago: July 30, 1953

Resignation of police chief Irvin Richmond is announced and will become effective tomorrow; Richmond, partner in Sunny Hill Dairy Co., says he is resigning because business requires all of his time; Richmond took office in June 1952; Capt. F.L. Schneider will serve as acting chief until permanent appointment is made.

Two resignations are accepted and replacement for one of vacancies is made at meeting of State College Board of Regents; M.G. Lorberg Jr., speech correctionist in Cape Girardeau public schools, is appointed to teach speech correction at college; he succeeds Wayne Thurman; other resignation is that of C. Merrell Murray, audio-visual director on Kent Library staff.

75 years ago: July 30, 1928

Main street business deal, involving closing of one and moving of another of two of oldest retail stores in downtown district, is consummated; J.J. Newberry Co., chain five-cent to $1 store, has leased 15 N. Main, now occupied by Bohnsack Clothing Co.; Maurice Bohnsack has purchased building at 19 N. Main and will move his store there; latter location had been occupied by A. Lang shoe store, which will close after 41 years in business in Cape Girardeau.

More than 4,800 cubic yards of earth has been moved in construction of new earth fill to viaduct that will cross Frisco Railroad track, four miles south of Cape Girardeau on Highway 61.
