Cape Girardeau County food stamp recipients may soon be required to participate in public works projects under a federal workfare program being considered by the County Court; the program would be patterned after a similar pilot program operating in Greene County.
A special week to find adoptive homes for cats will highlight what Humane Society of Southeast officials see as a renewal in the organization's ongoing work in animal welfare; "Adopt a Purr-fect Pet" will be held from Saturday through Aug. 7.
Frisco Railway Co. announces that effective Thursday, Pullman cars on the two night passenger trains through Cape Girardeau will be discontinued.
Pleas to the city of Cape Girardeau to begin necessary work leading to construction of sidewalks, to extend Jefferson Avenue and to care for safety provisions in the area of the new Jefferson School were made last night by the school board; board officials pointed out that the new school will be opened on Sept. 3, and there are no sidewalks along Minnesota Avenue, which will force many children to walk in the street.
A fossil specimen of orthoceras, an extinct genus, is brought to Cape Girardeau by Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Shelty of Illmo, who found it on a bluff 50 feet high near the Mississippi River, where a rock quarry is being opened; Prof. A.S. Duckworth of Teachers College identified the fossil.
Donald Pritchard, Teachers College tennis star, will compete in the National Junior Tennis Championship at Culver, Ind., starting Aug. 8; Don and his brother, George, have been working out daily on the college courts.
Work will start immediately on the new Frisco car repair shops, according to A. Anderson of St. Louis, the contractor who successfully bid to construct the building; J.H. Hineman will act as his superintendent and will have charge of construction.
Mrs. W.R. Stokes arrives in Cape Girardeau in the afternoon with her fine collie dog from Mounds, Ill.; until she can find a house, she will reside at 503 S. Frederick St.; her husband is a Frisco employee.
