The total bill for repairs to the Cape Girardeau County jail in Jackson is expected to be around $13,000, according to Presiding Judge Gene Huckstep; repairs to date total $9,603.27; that includes repairs to plumbing, windows and screens, cell doors, and electrical systems, and for architectural services.
By the end of this week, approximately 700 young men are expected to have registered for the Selective Service System at the Cape Girardeau post office; any young man born during 1960 or 1961, who hasn't already done so, must register with the Selective Service or face a maximum $10,000 fine, imprisonment or both.
Henry W. Bohle, 49, is found dead at his Cape Girardeau home in the morning; he is the brother of Elmer H. Bohle, 53, who died Thursday after being stricken with heat prostration at the shoe factory; the two brothers made their home with their father, August Bohle, who is the only survivor.
The main contingent of officers and men of the 140th Infantry Regiment of the National Guard from Southeast Missouri, who will engage in two weeks of military training at Camp McCoy, Wis., depart in five troop trains for camp.
Action looking toward the immediate expenditure of $80,000 in five Southeast Missouri counties for needed maintenance work on drainage canals of the Little River Drainage District is taken on the heels of an agreement with bondholders to curtail payments on bonds; this fund of $80,000, now in the hands of the district from tax payments and freed for maintenance work, will be expended immediately in contracts with farmers in cleaning ditches and doing other repair work.
Falling from his perch in a tree at his Illmo home late yesterday, Leonard Howard abruptly ended his quest for a tree-sitting record, finishing the endurance test with a mark of 218 hours.
The Rev. W.E. Furr of Kansas City, Mo., an able orator, occupies the pulpit at the Presbyterian Church in the morning; he is in Cape Girardeau with a view of meeting the members of the congregation and learning something of the character of the work in this city.
Capt. J.C. Weatherford of the Salvation Army, with headquarters in St. Louis, is in the city soliciting aid for the general work; he speaks at the German Methodist Church in the evening.
