A private airplane was forced to land on a Mississippi River sandbar south of Gorham, Ill., yesterday afternoon; the plane, a two-passenger Decathlon, apparently ran out of fuel.
Cape Girardeau County Clerk Rodney Miller says a new Missouri law allowing the use of computer printouts of voter registration records at election polls should help speed up the voting when there are long lines; county precincts will be using the printouts beginning next year, eliminating the need to haul bulky voter registration books to and from the polls.
According to Chamber of Commerce manager Philip Kearney, inquiries by industrial firms about the possibility of locating in the Cape Girardeau area have stepped up in the last few months; inquiries have been received from more than 50 companies.
Approximately 1,000 people gathered on the front lawn of Academic Hall yesterday evening for the State College summer commencement; the colorful block-long procession of 143 graduates, the faculty, clergy and others on the program, moved to the beat of the "Grand March" from Aida, crossing the divide from Kent Library to the wide walk fronting Academic Hall.
An order disposing of the remainder of the steel on the old Cape Girardeau & Northern Railroad is made by Judge L.L. Bowman in Common Pleas Court; this liquidates all of the equipment of the railroad with the exception of three old locomotives, which will be sold; the steel is sold to a St. Louis junk dealer.
Edward Mosley of Cape Girardeau has purchased a 1 1/2-acre tract in Rodney Vista; the purchase was made from Mrs. Iska Carmack of Los Angeles, Calif.; he plans to build a residence there.
David W. Hill of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Republican candidate for Congress, leaves Jackson in the morning for Oak Ridge, Appleton, Daisy, Arnsberg, Friedheim, Shawneetown and New Wells, accompanied by Fred A. Kies; they will finish at Pocahontas with a campaign speech.
Garrett Glenn and Julien Friant have moved their real estate office from the Houck building to a room recently vacated by the Kettle River Co. at 209 Broadway.
