The Scott City R-1 Board of Education approves a slight increase in the base salary for certified school system employees for the upcoming school year; the board approves a base salary of $11,050 for certified employees, an increase of $150 over the previous year.

50 years ago: July 29, 1957

Inadequate facilities to handle the run-off of storm water which collects on Broadway and roars down the hill in heavy rains brings two proposals to the Cape Girardeau City Council, but neither is considered acceptable; the Army Corps of Engineers has suggested digging a trench at the top of Broadway hill and covered with grillwork; this would channel off water into the sewer built last summer; the other plan is construction of a Broadway storm sewer.

Mrs. Minnie Drum, 86, became the oldest lady to ride and Ozark airplane out of Cape Girardeau, when she flew to St. Louis Friday to visit her son, Dr. Clarence Drum.

75 years ago: July 29, 1932

Efforts to stage a county fair or agricultural show this fall have been abandoned; in its place, an exhibition of county horses will be held in early October in Cape Girardeau by the Cape Girardeau County Horse Show.

The last of the stone for the post office annex at Cape Girardeau has arrived, and nearly all of it has been set in the walls by the contractor, Gerhardt Construction Co.; the roof can soon be placed.

100 years ago: July 29, 1907

T.A. Proctor, auditor of the Houck Railroad, has handed in his resignation and in August will assume the duties of traveling auditor of the Illinois Central, with headquarters in Chicago; his place with the Houck roads will be taken by J.F. Siefert, agent at Perryville, Mo.

Joe Goldbaum will carry on the business heretofore conducted under the name H.A. Astholz & Co., of Cape Girardeau.
