Donna McNeely, 28, is leaving Cape Girardeau for Hollywood's premier film institute next month; McNeely, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don McNeely, has been accepted as a 1989-90 Producing Fellow and will study producing for a year at the American Film Institute's Center for Advanced Film and Television Studies.

ALTENBURG, Mo. -- A large crowd attends the festival in the afternoon commemorating the 125th anniversary of the first Saxon Lutherans to Perry County; Dr. Oliver R. Harms, president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, is speaker for the event, which is held in the grove beside the historic Log Cabin College opposite Trinity Lutheran Church.

High, uncomfortable humidity, along with 95-degree temperatures, cuts attendance at the fifth annual Aviation Day at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport; attendance is over 5,000, but in years past it has always exceeded 10,000.

1939

JEFFERSON CITY -- Gov. Lloyd C. Stark recommends the appointment of Tom Scott of Benton, Missouri, as warden of the state penitentiary; Scott, former deputy warden, would fill the post vacant since the death several months ago of Frank Ramsey; Scott is a former sheriff of Scott County.

Harry P. Welman announces he has sold the former Pal-a-Dora cafe in the 600 block of Broadway to Lester Rhodes; Welman acquired the place several weeks ago, but never opened it for business.

1914

The congregation of the German Evangelical Church holds an outing at the old fairgrounds in the morning; Sunday School and worship services are held on the grounds.

Mrs. Fred Graden, a widow about 60 years of age, is seriously injured in the evening, when she jumps from the rear end of a wagon being drawn by a runaway team; the incident occurs on Independence Street, near the old Thilenius hill west of the city.
