A momentary fault on a Union Electric 161,000-volt feeder line between Cape Girardeau and Joppa, Ill., resulted in a 30- to 40-minute power failure in parts of the Cape Girardeau area last evening.

The recent closing of Independence Street west of Kingshighway in connection with the replacement of a bridge there has led to increased traffic through Arena Park from motorists who have found it a convenient detour.

50 years ago: July 25, 1961

Juel Mosley, who for more than 40 years wrote the contemporary history of Cape Girardeau as both reporter and managing editor of The Southeast Missourian, and whose editorial comments fostered many city improvements, died yesterday afternoon as he was being taken to a St. Louis hospital.

Residents of Perryville Road, from its start at Perry Avenue to Cape Rock Drive, have rejected by remonstrance a proposal to widen the street; most are afraid of speeding on the wider road.

75 years ago: July 25, 1936

Under a new ruling at the federal relief office here, people who have been certified for relief since Nov. 1 become eligible for WPA jobs; this will add about 100 people to the employment list.

Alfred J. Schrader, a brick mason, is injured shortly before noon when the boom of a derrick being used to raise a huge cornice stone at the Farmers and Merchants Bank annex under construction falls across his legs as the brace of the derrick gives way, allowing the stone to fall 25 feet to the sidewalk; both legs are badly bruised above the knees.

100 years ago: July 25, 1911

The 27th annual session of the Negro Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias and the 12th annual session of the Grand Court of Calanthe convene in the morning; the Knights are holding their sessions at the Masonic hall on Sprigg Street, while the women's auxiliary is meeting at St. James AME Church.

Representatives of the various Protestant denominations of the city met last night at the Christian Church to arrange for the continuance of the West End mission work under more favorable, and broader, circumstances; the mission will be supported and operated by the various churches instead of being supported solely by the First Presbyterian Church.
