Restored Confederate Air Force World War II B-25 Mitchell bomber is one of several historic airplanes on display at Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport as part of Cape Girardeau Balloon Fest '94; final event of festival is balloon launch at 6 a.m.

50 years ago: July 24, 1954

Two Southeast Missouri counties -- Dunklin and Stoddard -- have protested to State Tax Commission action of that body in making blanket increases in assessed valuation of counties; in Stoddard, commission ordered assessment raised 25 percent on town lots and farm land, and 40 percent on household goods and 10 percent on cattle.

Property at southwest corner of Frederick and William streets, owned by St. Mary's Parish, is being razed to make room for convent for teaching sisters of St. Mary's Grade School.

75 years ago: July 24, 1929

Pavement on Highway 61 between Cape Girardeau and Jackson is opened to traffic; traffic is forced to take old road only in a few instances, where shoulder work on new road is being completed.
