After appearing on a network television program, Murle MacKenzie Lindstrom, the new U.S. Women's Open golf champion, flies home to Cape Girardeau; Lindstrom closed with the best final round in a steady rain at Myrtle Beach, S.C., Saturday, 1-over-par 73, to pass favorites and post a 301 total for 72 holes, second highest winning total in USGA Open history.

75 years ago: July 2, 1937

M.E. Lesem, 73, for 50 years a traveling salesman, dies at his home on North Sprigg Street in the morning; born in Tuscumbia, Mo., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Lesem, natives of France.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- This community celebrates the opening of the first sector of blacktopped streets for this town and Lutesville, Mo., with an evening street dance; the street, through the middle of Marble Hill and in front of the Bollinger County Courthouse, was opened to traffic yesterday.

100 years ago: July 2, 1912

This section was visited by another thunderstorm last night, and lightning struck several places in the city; the most damage done by lighting was to St. Vincent's Catholic Church, the tower being badly damaged by fire resulting from the bolt; members of the parish were enjoying a lawn social when the storm hit.

Mrs. George S. Drew, who has been a resident of Cape Girardeau for about four years, leaves for a suburb of Boston to make her home; she moves to be closer to relatives.
