A truck delivering brick to an apartment construction site in the 2800 block of Whitener Street in Cape Girardeau yesterday was responsible for a two-hour power outage that darkened homes and businesses in the west end of town; the truck backed into a utility pole, knocking out power to over 2,000 Union Electric customers.

The Coast Guard is investigating the possibility that several missing channel buoys may have contributed to the grounding late Monday afternoon of a 25-barge tow and the towboat Agamemnon, just across from the Union Electric pumping station at Cape Rock.

1964

Boy Scouts and adults from Cape Girardeau gather at Capaha Park in the evening to participate in the Strengthen America's Heritage campfire.

Workers have completed removal of the damaged U.S. 61 bridge at Scott City and have begun the work of installing the new span in its place; two special bridge crews from Jefferson City, Missouri, with a total of 14 men, are working to complete the repairs as quickly as possible.

Residents of the Morgan Oak Street neighborhood, near the traffic bridge, complain to the city council about the noise that continues there almost all night long; large trucks and trailers park in the neighborhood and do their coupling and changing tires there.

Tim McCarthy, the 74-year-old head of McCarthy Construction Co., gives the big Teachers College library a final inspection before leaving for Anchorage, Alaska, where his firm will construct a big federal government customs building and unit to house government offices.

George Naeter, one of the publishers of The Daily Republican, leaves on the Lee Line boat early in the morning with William Corey and Raymond Strom for a visit to Memphis; the two boys recently won first and second prizes in a subscription contest for the newspaper.

The Rev. J.F. Lawson, pastor of the Presbyterian church, urges all members to attend the morning service, as some matters of vital importance to the congregation will be considered; he reminds his flock that during these hot months, men are to come to service without their coats and in the evening the ladies without hats.
