A spokesman for Republic Express Airlines announces his company will provide air service to Memphis, Tenn., from Cape Girardeau starting next month.

Illinois highway engineers have completed a review of proposed locations for a new Mississippi River bridge here as part of a study that could lead to the scheduling of a bridge location public hearing here; in turn, engineers with the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department will recommend three possible bridge locations and street corridors to it.

50 years ago: July 18, 1961

Assurances are given the Cape Girardeau City Council that adequate measures will be taken to landfill the city dump and correct problems that have arisen there; Cape Sanitation Inc. has acquired a 36-acre farm a half-mile northwest of the Egypt Mills road for use as its dump site; it recently caught fire and, despite repeated efforts to extinguish the flames, they continue to burn.

Sammy Aire Tucker is convicted by a jury of 12 men in circuit court in Jackson of murder in the first degree for the slaying of Cape Girardeau police officer Don Crittendon, 24, on March 21.

75 years ago: July 18, 1936

Missouri's rural letter carriers close their 34th annual convention here after three days of social and business activity and the 800 out-of-town delegates leave for their homes.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Low bidders on the construction of 136 miles of new roadway at an estimated cost of $1,086,200 are announced by the State Highway Department; low bid on the largest project -- 13.3 miles on a highway into St. Louis County from Wentzville, Mo. -- was submitted by Regenhardt Construction Co. of Cape Girardeau.

100 years ago: July 18, 1911

A large number of residents on Themis Street between Lorimier and Sprigg streets have filed a protest with the city council against the improvement of that street; the council had recently debated a resolution declaring it necessary to improve Themis Street by building a concrete foundation and placing on it a coat of macadam or other coating with a binder.

J.W. Bowman of Burfordville recently purchased an Overland and G.F. Siemers a Flanders 20 touring car from Southeast Missouri Motor Car Co.
