A fiscal 1990 operating budget totaling $44.9 million has been adopted by the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents; Dr. Bill W. Stacy's attendance at Friday's regents meeting was his last act as Southeast's president; he has accepted the post of president of California State University at San Marcos.

The Alumni Association of Southeast Missouri State University has selected five alumni to receive the university's Alumni Merit Award: William Volenetz of St. Louis; P.J. Newell Jr. of Jefferson City, Missouri; Aleta McDowell Crawford of Cape Girardeau; Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh of St. Louis; and Dr. John Baumstark of Omaha, Nebraska.

1964

Victory came Wednesday in Southeast Missouri Hospital's major fund-raising campaign, and it was announced architects within a short time will be given the signal to proceed on the detailed plans for a 64-bed addition; general chairman Martin Hecht is confident the $450,000 goal will be met.

Poles that were installed at Capaha Park lagoon as potential life-saving devices and Courthouse Park's semi-tame squirrels have been the objects of destructive aggressions; the four poles are broken and rest at the bottom of the lagoon, the work of vandals; and two squirrels were deliberately killed by two boys wielding bricks.

1939

Dr. C.L. Stanley, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, speaks at the morning services at Centenary Methodist Church; Stanley is the fourth guest minister to speak at Centenary since the pastor, the Rev. Don E. Schooler, went to Europe for a summer tour.

The Salvation Army moves its Sunday services to Courthouse Park; Adj. and Mrs. Elof Anderson, corps officers, will conduct services each Sunday evening at the park throughout the summer months.

1914

Because of the several acts of lawlessness in which National Guardsmen of the regiments stationed at Camp Kiel, south of Cape Girardeau, have indulged in the last two nights, a provost guard was established by order of Col. Donnelly; several squads, commanded by sergeants, patrolled the city's streets last night.

The hottest weather ever known around here is experienced when the thermometer at the Normal School reaches the high mark of 108 degrees.
