Dr. Robert E. Leestamper completes his tenure as president of Southeast Missouri State University; among changes Leestamper looks back with pride upon are development of new programs, hiring of additional faculty, relocation and enlargement of University Farm, acquisition of old St. Francis Hospital for student housing and academic programs, and institution of married student housing by university; he was president since Oct. 26, 1975.

Cape Girardeau firefighters and city yesterday reached tentative agreement after two days of stormy negotiations with federal mediator.

50 years ago: July 14, 1954

Alice Porritt of Cape Girar-deau will represent Missouri in Miss University beauty contest at Long Beach, Calif., next week; picked as Miss Missouri at National Soybean Festival in Portageville last fall, she is sponsored by Cape Girardeau Jaycees.

With temperatures hovering in high 90s and threatening to spill into 100-degree-plus bracket, county farmers are beginning to feel the pinch, having no rain in sight; pastures, both improved and unimproved, are pretty well burned up and not producing much in county.

75 years ago: July 14, 1929

Several members of Trinity Lutheran Church of Cape Gir-ardeau and other Lutherans from over district attend celebration of 90th anniversary of Trinity Lutheran Church at Altenburg, cradle of Lutheran denomination in Missouri; church was organized in 1839 by Saxon immigrants.

Dr. C.H. Morton, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, preaches at union service held in evening at Common Pleas Courthouse Park.
