25 years ago: July 10, 1987

Marilyn Wiggs, the Show Me Center's new box office manager, spent her first day on the job yesterday opening mail requests for tickets for the Bob Hope show, Aug. 28; she says it will take two or three more days to open just those received to date.

Sixteen new park benches were installed this week around Capaha Park lagoon, along with three older benches that were salvaged; some new picnic tables will be put in the area soon.

50 years ago: July 10, 1962

Two city government arms, the park department and the public library, will get larger chunks of a smaller city tax levy this year; the city council yesterday voted to slice three cents from last year's $1.33 per $100 valuation levy, but added a penny each to operate the parks and the library.

The First Federal Savings & Loan Association has acquired the Bremermann property on Broadway and the adjoining Heidbreder property facing Themis Street; the two pieces of land, across Broadway from First Federal in the 300 block, will provide a block-long stretch for contemplated future building.

75 years ago: July 10, 1937

Construction will begin next week on a huge brick building with 15,000 square feet of floor space on U.S. 61 west of the city to serve as a wine bottling plant and distribution center for the Moon Distributing Co.

An unidentified veteran of the Civil War's Battle of Cape Girardeau visited Fort D this week to see the work being done there and quietly slipped out again; members of the Louis K. Juden Post of the American Legion are desperately attempting to learn his identity so he may be included in dedication ceremonies for the restored fort.

100 years ago: July 10, 1912

T.J. Shorb, the contractor in charge of reconstructing Spanish Street, from Independence to Morgan Oak streets, began the work yesterday with a small crew to try out the plan of paying by the square rod for the removal of the old stone roadbed; his men were able to make good wages, so he increases his work this morning; the way rocks are being dug up is a sight to see.

The Terminal Hotel on Water Street has a new manager, Mrs. John Bohan, wife of the popular Frisco conductor, having taken charge of the place.
