Cape Girardeau city attorney Fred Boeckmann has been named the new city attorney in Columbia, Mo., effective Aug. 25; he has served as city attorney here since October 1982.

The city of Cape Girardeau will ask a federal appeals court for a rehearing in the aftermath of the court's ruling in the 7-year-old Westborough Mall case; the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last month reversed a 1983 jury verdict against Charleston, Mo., developer George Staples and sent the case back to the U.S. District Court here for a new trial.

50 years ago: July 1, 1961

Bids for construction of a convent and rectory buildings for St. Vincent's Catholic Parish are under consideration by Bishop Charles H. Helmsing of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese; the buildings will be constructed near St. Vincent's School, at Ritter and Forest.

Ten of the 12 building permits issued this week in the office of the city engineer are for new homes; they are to range in individual cost from $8,000 to $35,000 and have an overall cost of $157,000.

75 years ago: July 1, 1936

Veterans' bonus money is buying automobiles as well as other things in Cape Girardeau these days; reports from local car dealers and others in Southeast Missouri indicates that sales of motor cars have been stimulated greatly since payment of the bonus to World War veterans.

Condemnation proceedings to acquire 78,112 acres of Ozark mountain and foothill territory are filed in federal court; the government will purchase the land to help complete large U.S. Forestry units being developed in a big area of the hill country extending as far east as Bollinger County.

100 years ago: July 1, 1911

Jackson has the honor of entertaining the president of the Missouri Pacific-Iron Mountain Railroad; B.F. Bush arrives with a party of his officials on a special train at 1 p.m. and is entertained by the Commercial Club for an hour; the visit includes a motor tour of Jackson and the surrounding country.

Mrs. George Cramer and daughter, Laura, are visiting here from St. Louis; her husband was at one time mayor of Cape Girardeau, and also was once the postmaster; her son, Oscar, was also postmaster later on.
