Dr. David Stewart, a geophysicist at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named the head of the Central United States Earthquake Consortium, based in Marion, Ill.
A recaulked Capaha Park swimming pool opens following a weeklong delay necessitated by repairs to the almost 31-year-old facility; the pool originally was scheduled to open June 2, but the opening was delayed after a serious water leak was discovered.

The Cape Girardeau city budget for the fiscal year starting July 1, through considerable penciling and discussion on the part of City Councilmen during a special session yesterday, was tentatively whittled to $113,000; the council plans to slice off more before the budget is approved next week.
While it's probable there will be no action this year on the proposal, there has been considerable discussion of a suggestion made recently as to the establishment of a public golf course in the vicinity of Cape Girardeau to be operated on a fee basis.
Louis Houck received word Saturday evening of the death of Col. Thomas Beckwith at his home in Charleston, Mo.; Beckwith, 73, recently gave his superb collection of Indian artifacts to the Normal School.
Maple Wilson and family are moving to their farm on the Bloomfield Road, opposite the Burroughs home place; the Wilson residence on North Ellis Street has been leased for the summer to Professor A.W. Vaughan.
