Three years after its initial planning stages, Cape Girardeau's traffic signal replacement and curb reconstruction program is now 94 percent complete, according to city engineer Guy A. Lowes.

The county court has reached an agreement allowing Bob Flannery to farm approximately 20 acres on the south part of the County Farm Park surrounding Memorial Park Cemetery.

50 years ago: June 9, 1956

Despite the time-consuming delays to sewer work because of the unstable ground in the filled area of Main Street, total sewer construction is on schedule and the overall work on the first phase of the Main Street levee program is roughly 40 percent finished, the sub-office of the U.S. Engineers reports. The sewer contractor has discarded the regular trenching method on the filled area of Main and is moving pile drivers and materials there preparatory to driving sheet metal along the walls of thrench.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Gov. Phil M. Donnelly has approved $58,300,000 in bond issue building allotments for the state's universities, colleges and hospitals; of that amount, the college at Cape Girardeau will receive $2,740,000 for campus construction.

75 years ago: June 9, 1931

Members of the Cape Girardeau County Court and a representative of the highway department visited property owners near Appleton yesterday and reached agreement for securing all the right of way for construction of a final sector of Highway 25 around the town of Appleton.

John F. Miller of Millersville this week took out his 51st license as a merchant, having completed a half-century as a business man in that community.

100 years ago: June 9, 1906

It is reported that all the difficulties that had arisen with the construction of the Cape Girardeau and Thebes Bridge Terminal between Cape Girardeau and the Thebes, Ill., bridge have been resolved; it is further reported that by Aug. 1, trains will be operating between the Cape Girardeau & Chester (Houck) depot in Cape Girardeau and the Thebes bridge, making direct connection with all trains crossing the Mississippi River there.

Of all the liberal men in Cape Girardeau, George W. Caudle of the Southern Metal and Manufacturing Co. is the most so; he delights in having visitors go to his smelter plant, which is now building at the extreme south end of the city, and showing them over the grounds.
