BELL CITY, Mo. -- Engine failure apparently leads to crash of double-wing crop-dusting plane, causing serious injuries to pilot, Dennis McGarity, 27, of Sikeston; McGarity of McGarity Flying Service is spraying milo field on farm about four miles south of Bell City, when crash occurs.

Student newspaper of Eastern Michigan University at Ypsilanti has endorsed Dr. Robert E. Leestamper as best candidate to be-come president of that institution; Leestamper's contract as president of Southeast Missouri State University will expire next May.

50 years ago: June 9, 1954

Abstract of taxable property and its valuation of Cape Girardeau County as of Jan. 1, as set out in county assessor's books and due in hands of state Tax Commission on June 20, was sent yesterday by Edwin J. Sander, county clerk; aggregate abstract shows increase for year of all taxable property of $406,864; personal property valuation decreased $78,176, and there was $485,040 increase in city lots and land.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Ground was broken yesterday for new Marble Hill-Lutesville dial telephone exchange, which is expected to cost $302,000, including rural additions and rehabilitation work.

75 years ago: June 9, 1929

The Rev. W.E. Hicks, pastor of Red Star Baptist Church, has been voted $5 per week raise in his salary; congregation had voted him similar raise little more than year ago; Hicks has been at Red Star since September 1927.

At congregational meeting, members of First Presbyterian Church vote to give women members of church task of remodeling interior of main auditorium; it is planned to construct new ceiling in auditorium, refinish woodwork and furnishings, and provide new carpet for floor.
