A line of thunderstorms moved through Cape Girardeau and Scott counties at dusk yesterday producing hail, heavy rain and strong wins in the Delta-Chaffee, Mo., areas; trees were downed and farm buildings flattened; it is thought a tornado touched down on the farm three miles south of Delta.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Howard C. Tooke receives the Cobblestone Award, an annual civic award given by local businessman W.H. "Dutch" Estes, during First Friday Coffee at the Ramada Inn.

On-duty crews from Fire Station 1 are making a quarterly inspection tour of stores, hospitals and other places where fires of a serious nature could break out; more than 500 places will be inspected during the next two or three weeks.

75 years ago: June 7, 1935

A committee of retail grocers appeared before the City Council yesterday, asking that the city take immediate steps to force the closing of grocery stores that are keeping open and doing business on Sunday; city fathers, however, maintain there is little the city can do to enforce the Sunday closing.

Literal desertion of a portion of the Smelterville suburb and all of the residence section east of the Frisco Railroad tracks in the southern end of Cape Girardeau begins early in the morning as the rising Mississippi River spreads over that part of the town.

100 years ago: June 7, 1910

By ordinance, the Cape Girardeau City Council has increased the number of hosemen in the town's fire department from eight to 12, there now being three in each ward; this was done because of the shortness of hands at fires under the old arrangement of only two hosemen from each ward.

Broadway is getting a new picture show, G.A. Kassell having secured the vacant building next door to Hinchey-Greer's, at 505 Broadway, which he is remodeling for an up-to-date show house.
