Preparations are under way for Riverfest '93, which will begin its annual run Friday and end Saturday at 11 p.m. in downtown Cape Girardeau; this year's celebration will salute 200 years on Mississippi River with activities ranging from bicentennial parade to recreation of 1840s fur trading post.

Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents will consider approving $52.4 million operating budget for fiscal year 1994 when it meets Tuesday; proposed operating budget for fiscal year that begins July 1 is about $2 million higher than current budget.

25 years ago: June 7, 1978

Missouri Court of Appeals has ruled against city of Cape Girardeau in its electrical rate discrimination claim against Missouri Utilities Co. and State Public Service Commission; members of city council say fight isn't over yet; both Mayor Paul W. Stehr and Councilman Oliver A. Hope believe only way to win is for city to get its on power distribution system.

Section of North Sprigg Street road has been closed by Southeast Missouri State University, which owns property on either side; section of road was bypassed several years ago when Sprigg was extended straight northward to Bertling, intersecting some distance east of previous junction.

50 years ago: June 7, 1953

Notice has been given by Cape-Illmo Bus Line, operated by Bernard Bremermann, that effective Wednesday it will suspend its service for 90 days to five-city loop it serves; company has provided commuter services among Cape Girardeau, Ancell, Fornfelt, Chaffee and Illmo, operating several schedules each day.

More than 2,000 people witness spectacular model airplane stunt and combat competitions at Arena Park in fourth annual Illinois-Missouri-Kentucky model contest; among winners from three states is Gary Austin, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Austin of Kirkwood, formerly of Cape Girardeau; he swept first place in speed, stunt and flying skill classes of both A and B divisions of freshman contests.

75 years ago: June 7, 1928

J. Grant Frye, Cape Girardeau lawyer, has filed his formal declaration for Republican nomination for prosecuting attorney; he is first to file and, from reports, he will be only Republican to enter race; Frye, who was the Republican nominee two years ago when he won over field of several candidates, was defeated by S.P. Dalton, Democrat nominee, by small margin.

Marble Hill, Mo. -- Present indications are that enrollment at summer term of Will Mayfield College will set new record, and that will be followed by heavy enrollment at fall term; largest class in history of school was graduated this year, and opening of new $100,000 Administration Building provides additional room for school's expansion.
