Construction of the 150-bed, $8.5 million Missouri Veterans Home in northwest Cape Girardeau should begin early next spring and will have a major impact in the area when completed, said Ron Norris, director of the Missouri Division of Design and Construction, speaking at the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce First Friday Coffee.

Holcomb Foundation Engineering of Carbondale, Ill., is doing test drilling at the site of a proposed 8,000-acre lake in Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties.

50 years ago: June 5, 1962

Louise M. Eckhardt, aged about 77, dies at a Cape Girardeau hospital, the daughter of Otto and Bertha Dittlinger Eckhardt; for many years, she taught private music lessons; her father was head of the music department at the old Normal School.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Voters approve a $10,000 general obligation bond for construction of a new fire station adjacent to the city hall in a special election; the vote is 131 for and 40 against.

75 years ago: June 5, 1937

A proposal for a new library and museum building at Teachers College survives, in part at least, the action of the Missouri Senate, which passes the educational appropriation bill after deducting a flat 10 percent from the House figures.

Lowry Miller, a teacher at May Greene School, has succeeded the veteran F.L. Stacy as lifeguard at the municipal swimming pool at Fairground Park.

100 years ago: June 5, 1912

H.H. Haas, proprietor of the St. Charles drugstore and one of the town's most progressive citizens, has decided to become a candidate for the legislature on the Republican ticket; he decided to get into the race after being told that the incumbent, Herman Rabich, wouldn't be a candidate; Rabich may be a candidate for state senator.

Charles A. Becker, one of the proprietors of the Star barbershop on Broadway, leaves for Cincinnati, where he will spend a few days with relatives; on his return home, he will stop at Tell City, Ind., to collect his wife and baby, where they have been visiting family for the past two weeks.
