The Cape Girardeau County Court denies a request from the Women's Center and Safe House in Cape Girardeau to put a request to raise divorce decree and marriage license fees on the August ballot; income from the increases would have provided additional center funding.

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the world's largest civil aviation organization, has condemned a federal government plan to close the Cape Girardeau flight service station.

50 years ago: June 4, 1959

A rising Mississippi River continues to pour water into the hull of the towboat Rebel Warrior, stranded on a rock reef off the Illinois shore opposite Gale; the boat went aground late Tuesday along with four empty barges.

Van Goodwin announces that his company, the Goodwin Motor Co., 1415 Independence St., has been appointed dealer for the Edsel motor car in the Cape Girardeau area; William Brune of Edgewater Motors says his company terminated its Edsel sales agreement.

75 years ago: June 4, 1934

Negotiations are completed between Main Street merchant Louis Hecht and the Kroger Grocer & Baking Co., the latter signing a long-term lease on a new building at 30-32 N. Main St., to be erected immediately; J.W. Gerhardt will tear down the existing structure at that location and build the new, one-story brick building that will house the Kroger store.

An option has been taken on a building at 127 N. Main St., owned by Pauline and Ann Osterloh, by the Kaner Wall Paper & Paint Co. of St. Louis; the firm proposes to establish a retail store there.

100 years ago: June 4, 1909

Pursuant to a call by Jackson Mayor William B. Schaefer, a public meeting was held at the courthouse last evening to discuss the proposition to purchase the Jackson Military Academy; Colonels Birmingham and Hamling, wishing to retire, have offered it for a high school for the district.

After having been shut down for two weeks, the Standard Basket and Veneer Co. in Cape Girardeau will resume operations next Monday morning.
