1964

Fire breaks out in a cafe in Oak Ridge in the morning, consuming that building plus a feed store and a garage before being brought under control; at least two other buildings -- a hardware store and a residence -- also catch fire from the heat, but are saved by Civil Defense Sheriff's Patrol firefighters.

Area farmers, who yesterday were facing significant crop losses, are elated over a drought-breaking rain that spills significant amounts throughout the district.

1939

An automobile owned by T.R. Morgan of Cape Girardeau leaves its parking spot on Water Street at the foot of Themis Street and plunges out of sight into the muddy floodwaters of the Mississippi River; Morgan had driven to the riverfront on his way to work, parked and gone to look at the reading on the river gauge; as he turned to go back to the car, he saw the 1935 Plymouth deluxe sedan roll down the wharf and slip into the river.

Amos Morrow of Cape Girardeau has purchased the Palo-Dora Cafe, 624 Broadway, from Maggie Brown, who operated it several months.

1914

Members of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club will meet tonight to discuss the proposition of locating a large industry here; a company has been organized, styled the Director Development Co., to promote the organization of a big iron company, which will be called the Director Iron Co., with a capital stock of $6 million; it will manufacture cast iron, gas and water pipes.

Anita Bohnsack left Monday for Portland, Oregon, where she will locate as an osteopathic physician; she graduated from the Kirksville School of Osteopathy a few weeks ago and has been here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Bohnsack Sr.
