50 years ago: June 30, 1954

Fire engine from Thebes, Ill., was destroyed by fire yesterday, after it had made fire run to near McClure; Thebes firemen were called in to help fight field fire at farm of John Rhymer; after truck arrived, it caught fire and was ruined before men could extinguish blaze.

Seventy-two large trailer trucks were in line at one time last night awaiting turns for wheat grading and elevator service at two mills of Cape County Milling Co. at Jackson; trucks were from St. Marys, Perryville, Brazeau, Lithium, Crosstown, Apple Creek, Lutesville, Commerce, Advance, Benton, Charleston, Sikeston, Bertrand, Bell City, Morley, Chaffee, Sturdivant and Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: June 30, 1929

Definite steps toward preservation of Old McKendree Methodist Church, first Methodist church west of Mississippi, were taken last Sunday at meeting of Northern and Southern groups of denomination of church.

Excavating for new residence of Judge and Mrs. O.A. Knehans began Friday at southwest corner of North Sprigg and Bellevue; building will be constructed of white limestone and will have seven rooms; two carloads of stone have been shipped here from Ste. Genevieve, and additional car is expected to arrive soon.
