25 years ago: June 3, 1984

A Cape Girardeau native, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth C. Johnston, will be appointed superintendent of the Cape Girardeau-Farmington District of the United Methodist Church at the conclusion of the annual conference being held June 5 to 8 at Fayette, Mo.; he and his wife, Joy, will move to Cape Girardeau following the conference.

The Rev. David Dissen, administrative pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, marks his 25th anniversary as a Lutheran pastor.

50 years ago: June 3, 1959

BENTON, Mo. -- The Kelly School District, in a special election Tuesday, defeated a proposal to levy an additional 30-cent incidental tax; the money derived would have been used to make repairs at the Owensby School building.

In a session of the Jackson Board of Aldermen on Monday, an ordinance passed to propose extension of the city limits; the area in question is the Indian Hills Subdivision.

75 years ago: June 3, 1934

The Rev. C.H. Morton, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, recently observed his 32nd anniversary in the ministry; he began preaching at Sweet Springs, Mo., and, when October rolls around, he will have been pastor of the local church 15 years.

Cape Girardeau escaped damaging winds late Saturday while storms struck scattered parts of Southeast Missouri; in addition to heavy rains that pelted the area, crops were damaged by hail; a high wind brought no more than clouds of dust and a light shower to Cape Girardeau and did nothing to relieve the heat.

100 years ago: June 3, 1909

The Cape Girardeau School Board had another meeting last night for the election of a superintendent, principal and assistant principals of the high school, principal of the Jefferson School and supervisor of drawing and music; after failing to get results on the five ballot, however, the board adjourned without electing anyone.

Charles Vogelsang, a farmer living on the Jackson Road, is one of the few farmers of the county who has a sheep-clipping machine; last week he finished shearing 384 head.
