Jackson - With state and federal approval secured, County Commission is seeking bids for replacement of 200-foot bridge across Diversion Channel; Associate Commissioner Leonard Sander, who oversees roads and bridges for commission, says bridge will be largest one ever replaced by county; 70 percent of cost will come from federal highway funds that are available to cities and counties; bridge will be located on County Road 253 between Whitewater and Delta.

Convention and Visitors Bureau Advisory Board members say they support $11 million proposal to develop St. Vincent's Seminary, but are reluctant to commit funds to project; Colonial Cape Girardeau Foundation is proposing to purchase 150-year-old property and convert it into national and local historic museum and Civil War interpretive center.

25 years ago: June 3, 1977

Alleging lack of proper management and deteriorating condition of golf course, Cape Girardeau Jaycees have taken steps to terminate lease of Charles Weber, who has managed Jaycee Public Golf Course past six years; expert in golf course construction and management recently examined course and indicated that only total reconstruction and relocation of existing greens would solve unplayable condition of course.

50 years ago: June 3, 1952

Rails now being removed from Broadway to make way for new section of concrete pavement between Lorimier and Middle streets have been in place for 47 years; they were put down in 1905 and were used by old streetcars for 29 years; cars made their final run on Aug. 10, 1934.

Declaring, in their opinion, "that rent controls are no longer needed in our city," members of Cape Girardeau Rent Advisory Board submit their resignations and recommend to T.E. Woods, housing expediter in Washington, that local rent control be abolished; similar recommendation goes to city council, which several weeks ago heard plea from two lawyers that it hold public hearing and, if testimony warranted, rent control be abolished by municipal action.

75 years ago: June 3, 1927

Illmo - Establishment of shoe factory of Menzies Shoe Co. in Illmo, to employ 350 people and with payroll of $1 million in 10 years, is assured, following meeting last night of those who had contributed $75,000 to secure plant; contract, providing for establishment of plant, was signed by board of trustees of local contributors, and it was announced that work on construction of building will be started within five days.

Charles L. Litzelfelner, 33, who was found seriously injured near Frisco railway tracks one-half mile north of Neelys Landing yesterday afternoon, dies in Cape Girardeau hospital; he was found lying face down on west side of railway right-of-way. - Sharon K. Sanders
