Two shots were fired at a Cape Girardeau police officer last night in connection with a break-in at Southeast Missouri Bank, 11 S. Broadview St.; burglars used a tractor with a backhoe attachment to partially tear open the night deposit box.

Speaking to a gathering of Missouri Young Democrats in Missouri, Secretary of State Warren E. Hearnes says the Republican party has moved far to the right because it's controlled by "old codgers" whose re-elections are assured.

Three Cape Girardeau contracting firms with a total low bid of $314,296 apparently made the best offer for construction of a mathematics wing to Magill Hall on the State College campus; the firms are Crites & Sailer Construction Co., A.E. Birk & Son and Kelpe Electric Co.

75 years ago: June 29, 1937

Paul B. McNeely is confirmed by the city council as the new chief of police of Cape Girardeau, succeeding Herbert F. Wickham, who has been appointed to the Missouri State Highway Patrol; Charles A. Schweer is named assistant chief.

Authority has been given by the archbishop for St. Mary's Catholic Parish here to proceed with the grade school building project; $16,300 of a needed $26,000 has already been secured in pledges and donations for the school.

100 years ago: June 29, 1912

Two Illinois farmers, who are also bankers in Marissa, Ill., have purchased some fine, unimproved lands near Commerce, Mo.; Herman Kunze bought 200 acres at $40 an acre and his brother, Henry Kunze, 240 acres at the same price.

Ed Frenzel yesterday got a letter from his brother who is a miller at St. Marys, Mo., asking him to look up some brick layers and send them up to him early next week; a storm swept over the town Thursday evening, tearing down part of the mill and damaging other brick structures.
