The city of Cape Girardeau has embarked upon a $10,000 advertising campaign to boost passenger boardings at the municipal airport and prevent the loss of $300,000 a year in federal funding for the facility.
Gasoline prices continue their downward spiral in the immediate Cape Girardeau area despite crude oil prices hovering at just over $20 a barrel; the lowest prices are at Fruitland, where unleaded fuel at self-service pumps sells for 88.9 cents a gallon.
Ethan Shepley, candidate for the Republican nomination for governor, tours Cape Girardeau en route to Sikeston, Missouri, and the Shepley Day Jamboree, being held this evening in Malone Park; featured at the jamboree will be Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt and the Foggy Mountain Boys.
Three Cape Girardeau youths will depart in the next few days for service academies; Preston Foster and Kenneth McElreath will leave for the Air Force Academy, while John Bayer Jr., will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.
Taking advantage of the hot, and mostly dry, weather, Southeast Missouri farmers have waded through more than half of the harvest of their 100,000-acre wheat crop; a heavy rain halted the harvest in the southern end of Scot and western and northern ends of Mississippi and New Madrid counties late yesterday, but work continues uninterrupted in Cape Girardeau County fields.
Jackson's new post office is to be beautified by a mural, the only post office in Missouri so decorated; artists will compete for the opportunity to design the mural, which will measure 12 feet by 5 feet 2 inches, and will be in the lobby.
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- A big trust company, with a capital of $100,000, has been organized here, and articles of incorporation were filed at Benton, Missouri, this week; more than 43 residents of Chaffee, Illmo, Benton, Fornfelt and St. Louis have stock in the new enterprise, the biggest stockholder being F.L. Loy of Chaffee.
Col. A.V. Donnelly of the First Regiment of the National Guard of Missouri arrives on the noon train from St. Louis with several other officers of the regiment and two from the adjutant general's office at Jefferson City, Missouri, to make final arrangements for the guard encampment here.
