The Rev. Albert F. Nyland is retiring as pastor of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Pocahontas; he officiates at his last worship service in morning, and potluck dinner follows at noon; Nyland has served number of congregations during his 41-year ministry; he came to Pocahontas in 1984.
Twelve cars of Burlington Northern freight train derail early in day, just north of Cape Rock Park; none of cars overturns, and train's three crew members aren't injured.

Cape Girardeau City Council meets in closed session to discuss work slowdown by city firefighters in protest of city refusing to meet their demands for increased wages and better retirement plan; all city employees have been offered advancement under normal pay plans plus average $312 across-the-board raise.
Long lines and short supplies greet motorists at local gasoline pumps; check of most of city's gasoline stations indicate that majority have shortened hours and limited gasoline purchases; some report they are out of gasoline all together.
50 years ago: June 26, 1954
Most phenomenal wheat crop in history, with yields that have measured up to 60.3 bushels per acre, is being harvested this year in Southeast Missouri, overtaxing storage capacity and forcing farmers to sell on market at substantially lower price than if they had storage facilities to put it on government loan.
Window is damaged and paint was blistered on exterior of Rush H. Limbaugh residence, 814 N. Henderson, in fire Friday night; fireplace logs ranked alongside house ignited from unknown source.
75 years ago: June 26, 1929
Plans for Kelso Oil Co.'s new super-service unit to be erected at junction of West Broadway and Highway 61 are released so that contractors might examine them and prepare bids to be received early in July.
Oakenwold, one of most distinguished residences in Cape Girardeau, will again be place of rare beauty; stately old building, damaged by fire several weeks ago, is being rebuilt on original lines so as to conserve individuality it maintained for many years; owner of home is Mrs. H.P. Peironnet.
