50 years ago: June 24, 1959

Maj. Gen. William S. Stone, a native of Cape Girardeau and nephew of Lee L. Albert of Cape Girardeau, is named superintendent of the new Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo.; he will be the second superintendent to serve the academy.

Little Jimmy Dickens and the Duke of Paducah, among others, will be presented in person in a variety show July 14 at Arena Park; the show is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Police Department for its special equipment fund.

75 years ago: June 24, 1934

Franklin Owen, son of the Rev. E.D. Owen, delivers his first sermon in the evening at First Baptist Church; his father is conducting evangelistic services at the Baptist Church at Kennett, Mo.; the youth, a student at State College, has decided to enter the ministry, following in the footsteps of his father, pastor of the church.

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department is seeking a large American flag to adorn the top of the pole which has been erected on the drill tower in the rear of the fire department building; firefighters worked all week putting up the iron pole, which is 73 feet high and rises 33 feet above the tower.

100 years ago: June 24, 1909

Louis Houck, president of the Houck Railroad system, returned home last night from a two-day trip over the Saline Valley division; new station houses will be built at Minith and at Coffman, the northern terminus of the Saline Valley line; also, a new stock pen will be built at Daisy; new stock chutes were recently built at Oak Ridge; the livestock business on the railroad is growing steadily.

Constable George Rodenmayer has sold the Commercial Saloon on Main Street to Walter Light and Mr. Franz, two well-known men.
