25 years ago: June 23, 1978

Special parking place adjacent to Houck Stadium for large contributors to Southeast Missouri State University athletic fund is being proposed by administration, once track is moved to new location off Bertling Street; parking proposal was reported by President Robert E. Leestamper near close of Thursday's board of regents meeting.

News reports in Cape Girardeau that city has been recommended for prosecution for violating clean water regulations are denied both by city administration and state's Clean Water Commission; "Cape Girardeau doesn't even come close," says Bob Hentges, chief of commission's permit section in Jefferson City.

50 years ago: June 23, 1953

Most extensive street oiling program in city's history, embracing equivalent of about 60 blocks and costing $2,557.48, will begin this week; proposed by a few property owners who were faced with clouds of dust throughout summer months, idea mushroomed when city officials arranged for St. Louis firm to do oiling at 6 cents per front foot.

City Health Commissioner Roy Smith says his department will rent bulldozer and begin burying garbage July 1, as temporary measure, unless city completes arrangements for garbage removal by private contractor by that date; new state law which forbids feeding city garbage to hogs goes into effect July 1.

75 years ago: June 23, 1928

Crest of high water in Southeast Missouri streams, which has flooded highways and lowlands for several days, is expected to be reached tonight or tomorrow; Highway 25 in vicinity of Dutchtown is covered with water to depth of six feet; Route 51 is open north of Advance, but water is over road south of town; Highway 60 is closed at Poplar Bluff, with 30 inches of water over Black River bridge.

Final plans for construction of two-story building on Broadway, to be occupied by retail store of Montgomery Ward & Co., have been completed and actual work on building will get under way by July 1.
