25 years ago: June 21, 1987

Organizers say the two-day Riverfest ‘87 drew between 42,000 and 45,000 people to downtown Cape Girardeau, setting a record for the event.

Construction of a warehouse at 500 William St. is nearing completion; when finished, the building will serve as a storage place for newsprint for the Southeast Missourian newspaper.

50 years ago: June 21, 1962

A group of scientists and research assistants from the University of Wisconsin is planning to detonate a series of explosions in the Mississippi River 10 miles above Cape Girardeau as part of a continuing nationwide study of the earth's crust; the underwater tests will begin Saturday.

Carl Ritter, State College all-time scoring leader in basketball, is eligible to play for the Indians next season, says Coach Charles Parsley; Ritter, declared scholastically ineligible last year, reportedly made his grades during the spring semester; Parsley also announces Notre Dame High standout Ken Reiker and Larry Crisel of Puxico, Mo., will attend Cape State.

75 years ago: June 21, 1937

With impressive ceremony, 65 charter members of the Louis K. Juden Squadron No. 63 of the Sons of American Legion were initiated Saturday night at Legion Hall; Martin Estes, captain, heads the new organization.

Roofing of Lorimier School by the E.A. Brunson Construction Co. is nearly half done; inside, workers are laying the floor of the gymnasium, and plastering should be started this week.

100 years ago: June 21, 1912

A baseball team -- the Cape Girardeau All-Stars -- has been formed and is looking for games; players are William Kuehne, Morton, W. Masterson, R. Baker, E. Meyer, Beyhimer, Hawn, Fuerth, Caldwell, Probst, Leher, Davis and Bowman; manager is G.W. Bowman.

Mary Foley of Cape Girardeau and Edna Quigley of Illmo returned Tuesday night on the Rees Line, after an extended visit in Loretto, Ky., where they attended the graduation of Nadine McFall from the Loretto Academy, and in Louisville, Ky.; McFall accompanied them and will visit Foley for a few days.
