50 years ago: June 21, 1957

Fred Nicholas, superintendent of the Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. plant in Cape Girardeau, announces that the company has on hand, ready for installation, the latest and most efficient model of Multicone dust collectors for the older plant.

A deed to the portion of the Mississippi River traffic bridge to Illinois and two checks totaling $82,000 to pay for a new eastern approach are delivered to the Illinois State Highway Department at Carbondale by bridge manager George Penzel; the deed and construction money are given on behalf of the Cape Special Road District, which in a week will relinquish ownership of the bridge to the states of Missouri and Illinois.

75 years ago: June 21, 1932

The Cape Girardeau City Council in session yesterday by ordinance placed the city tax rate for the ensuing year at 72 cents on the $100 valuation, a reduction of 2 cents over the past year, thus affecting a savings in taxes of about $2,500 to property owners.

Beginning Sunday, train service on the Jackson branch of the Missouri Pacific Railroad will be discontinued; in other words, there will be no more Sunday trains on that branch.

100 years ago: June 21, 1907

The special session of the United States district and circuit courts convenes at the Common Pleas Courthouse in Cape Girardeau in the morning; unexpectedly, Judge Dyer comes down from St. Louis to occupy the bench; it had been announced some time ago that Judge Pollock of Kansas would be here for the special session.

One of the new Houck Railroad engines arrived in Cape Girardeau last night under its own steam; it is nearly ready to be placed into service.
