Executive Director Tom Cooley of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority resigns to become executive director of the Cape Girardeau Regional Commerce and Growth Association and president of a newly formed, private industrial and real estate development corporation, Lorimont Development Corp., Inc.

The Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau drops to a 30-year low in the morning, 7.2 feet; river forecasters say the stream will go even lower by the end of the week.

Mayor Walter H. Ford says the Cape Girardeau will buy about $600,000 in short-term government securities with the proceeds of its million-dollar general obligation bond sale that was completed this week; the bonds, issued to meet the cost of the city's sewage disposal system project, were sold to a St. Louis syndicate.

Cape Girardeau County assessor Edwin Blumenberg reports the number of mules in the county dropped from 110 to 58 this year from last; jacks, on the other hand, were up to 36 from 25 last year; cattle showed a slight increase from 31,325 to 32,033; hogs and poultry were both down.

Handcuffed to the steering wheel of a Ford V-8 "60" automobile, Jack Cress begins a grueling 100-hour safety-endurance drive at 10 a.m. at Lorimier and Themis streets; the drive, testing the endurance of both driver and automobile, will end at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Groves Motor Co. building.

The first session of a Community Peace Forum, to run at Cape Girardeau Central High School on three consecutive nights, is held in the evening with the Parent-Teacher Organization in charge; Naomi Pott leads the discussion on "Child Education for Peace," assisted by Mrs. True Taylor and Mrs. W.P. Whitledge.

Cape Girardeau's firefighters have adopted a fine little white puppy as a mascot; the dog wandered into the station Thursday in search of a home, and the boys have adopted him; he will likely be named "Nick," in honor of Police Chief D.A. Nichols.

Gussie Siemers, the accommodating young druggist in the Wasem drugstore in Haarig returns from Pertle Springs, Mo., where he had been attending the state pharmaceutical meeting.
