25 years ago: June 14, 1987

The 110th anniversary of the congregation of St. John's United Church of Christ, three miles west of Fruitland, is observed; charter members of the church are honored with a special song by their descendants.

The Southeast Missouri Kennel Club holds its 57th All-Breed-Dog and Obedience Trial at the Arena Building; more than 1,000 people attend, and dogs from 33 state are shown.

50 years ago: June 14, 1962

Conversion of the County Farm property into a county recreation park may be done without a vote, and means are provided whereby a part of county revenue may be used for its maintenance, says Prosecuting Attorney Stephen E. Strom; he adds that the statutes allow city councils within the county to join with the county court in developing a county park and also provide for a separate park board to supervise it.

The new water fountain at the south entrance of the county courthouse in Jackson is dedicated in the evening; three plaques -- to the world war veterans who gave their lives, to the county court and to the chamber of commerce -- are unveiled by C.W. Knox, first commander of the American Legion post.

75 years ago: June 14, 1937

The Rev. H.F. Schuermann, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, announces that parishioners have contributed $8,568.55 to a fund for the construction of an addition to St. Mary's Grade School; the parish needs $25,000 for the project.

Lumber in a fence and grandstand he had developed on U.S. 61 at the Gordonville Road has been removed by J. Roy Mahy of Cape Girardeau; Mahy improved the field three years ago, but he is now using the material to build small dwellings near his store on North Sprigg Street.

100 years ago: June 14, 1912

The J.J.J. Fishing Club met last night at Jackson and elected officers: president, Judge E.D. Hays; vice president, A.D. Milde; secretary-treasurer, William Paar; the group has a nice clubhouse near the Iron Mountain tracks at Dutchtown.

Having passed an examination before a state board, Henry Kimmich of the Brinkopf undertaking establishment and Tony Hohler of the Walther firm are now authorized embalmers.
